Deadly Drone Strike Hits Deep Inside Russia as War Reaches Tatarstan

A Ukrainian drone strike has killed at least 13 people in Russia’s Tatarstan region, officials said on Monday, in one of the deadliest attacks on Russian soil since the war began.

The strike hit the industrial city of Nizhnekamsk, more than 1,100 kilometres from Ukraine’s border. Among the dead was a child. Authorities said 75 others were injured.

For many in Russia, it was a stark reminder that the war, once distant, is now reaching deeper into the country.

Flames over an industrial hub

The attack unfolded overnight and continued into the morning, according to local officials. Residents reported hearing sirens for hours.

Images shared online, and verified by news organizations, showed thick black smoke rising above the city skyline. Flames could be seen from what appeared to be an industrial site.

Ukraine’s military later confirmed that the Tanevo oil refinery in Nizhnekamsk had been struck. A Ukrainian defence manufacturer, FirePoint, said drones it produces were used in the operation.

Kyiv has not issued an official public statement on the strike.

Civilian toll disputed

Russian authorities said both industrial facilities and residential areas were hit. The country’s Investigative Committee said civilians “not involved in military operations” were among those affected.

Those claims could not be independently verified.

Rustam Minnikhanov, the head of Tatarstan, confirmed the deaths and declared a period of mourning. “This is a tragedy for our republic,” he said.

Nizhnekamsk’s mayor, Radmir Belayev, described the attack as “a tremendous pain for all of us”.

A widening strategy

The strike appears to be part of a broader Ukrainian effort to hit targets far beyond the battlefield. In recent months, Kyiv has stepped up attacks on oil refineries, fuel depots and logistics hubs inside Russia.

Ukrainian officials have argued that such sites help sustain Moscow’s war effort.

Earlier this year, similar strikes were reported in the same region, including one in June targeting refinery infrastructure.

Russia said its air defences shot down more than 450 Ukrainian drones overnight, though details of where they were intercepted remain unclear.

Retaliation and escalation

The attack comes amid continued Russian strikes on Ukrainian cities.

Last week, a large-scale assault on Kyiv involving drones and missiles killed at least 21 people, according to Ukrainian officials. In Kharkiv, near the front line, five more people were killed in artillery fire overnight.

Both sides have increasingly turned to long-range attacks, often hitting infrastructure but also causing civilian casualties.

For residents of places like Nizhnekamsk, far from the front lines, the war now feels closer than ever.
