Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna says he will not abandon the politicians he regards as some of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s closest allies, singling out Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua.
Speaking to residents in Kitui on Monday, Sifuna said his political ties with Raila’s allies would remain intact despite calls for him and other ODM figures to move on from the former prime minister’s political relationships.
“I know who the true friends of Raila were, and we are not leaving soon,” Sifuna said.
He described Kalonzo and Wambua as loyal allies who stood with Raila through several presidential campaigns.
“Kalonzo walked with Raila in 2013, 2017 and 2022,” Sifuna said, questioning why they should now distance themselves from the Wiper leader after years of political cooperation.
Sifuna also praised Wambua and backed his bid to become the next governor of Kitui.
“I pray that you fulfil your goal of becoming the Kitui Governor,” he told the senator.
His remarks come as opposition leaders continue to debate how to shape their political alliances ahead of the 2027 general election. Kalonzo has positioned himself as a potential presidential contender, while discussions over opposition unity and possible running-mate arrangements remain ongoing.
Kalonzo said on Monday that he would have no objection to Sifuna serving as his running mate, although he cautioned that Kenya’s regional and demographic considerations would have to be taken into account.
“I have no problem deputising Sifuna, but you must take into account Kenya’s demographics,” Kalonzo said in an interview with NTV.
Sifuna’s comments underline the continuing political significance of the relationships Raila built with opposition figures during his campaigns. They also come as parties and politicians begin positioning themselves for a closely watched 2027 contest.
For Sifuna, however, political loyalty remains a matter of history as much as strategy.
He said he would continue to stand by those who, in his view, stood with Raila through difficult political moments.
