Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has launched a strongly worded response against journalist Andrew Mwenda after being described as “senile” and incapable of proper judgment.
In a lengthy statement Museveni defended both his political legacy and Uganda’s economic direction, declaring that he remains capable of defending himself and the country.
Museveni accused Mwenda of undermining Uganda’s industrial transformation efforts while failing to acknowledge local innovators and entrepreneurs driving the country’s manufacturing and agricultural sectors.
Museveni Defends Uganda’s Industrialization Agenda
The Ugandan president challenged Mwenda to investigate local entrepreneurs and projects that he claims are delivering real economic impact across the country.
Museveni specifically mentioned projects linked to Magoola, Ssenfuka, Tugume, and Professor Muranga, urging critics to visit factories, agricultural projects, and herbal medicine initiatives operating in different parts of Uganda.
He also singled out Kiira Motors as a symbol of Uganda’s industrial ambitions, accusing “neo-colonial agents” of dismissing local manufacturing initiatives.
According to Museveni, critics who oppose industrial projects are effectively supporting a system where Africa remains dependent on exporting raw materials instead of finished products.
Museveni Accuses Mwenda of Sabotaging Uganda’s Growth
The Ugandan leader accused Mwenda of deliberately externalizing internal government discussions, including Cabinet matters, to social media in ways that could damage investor confidence.
Museveni claimed Mwenda and others previously contributed to Uganda’s electricity challenges by allegedly sabotaging the Bujagali Electricity Project partnership with AES in the early 2000s.
The president insisted Uganda’s economy is performing strongly, citing a reported annual growth rate of 6.3%.
He urged Ugandans to ignore critics whom he described as opponents of Uganda’s economic transformation agenda.
