Just after sunrise on Monday, Nairobi slowed down for something few residents expected to see.

Cars eased to the roadside. Matatus paused mid-route. Traders stopped arranging their stalls. Then phones shot into the air as word spread through the city centre: Emmanuel Macron was jogging through Nairobi alongside marathon great Eliud Kipchoge.

There were no grand speeches. No formal convoy pushing traffic aside. Just the French president and the world’s most celebrated marathon runner moving through the streets at an easy pace before the start of the day’s meetings at the Africa Forward Summit.

For a city used to hurried mornings and heavily guarded diplomatic visits, the moment felt unusually personal.

Crowds quickly gathered along the route near Kenyatta International Convention Centre, where leaders from across Africa and Europe are attending the summit. Boda boda riders abandoned their motorcycles to watch. Office workers stood outside buildings filming the pair. Some residents broke into chants of “Kipchoge!” while others called out Macron’s name as security officers tried to manage the swelling crowds.

Kipchoge, known for his calm demeanour and effortless stride, appeared relaxed throughout the run. Macron, dressed casually for the jog, waved repeatedly to onlookers and exchanged brief conversations with the Kenyan athlete as cameras followed closely behind.

The run may have lasted only a short while, but it quickly became one of the most talked-about moments of the summit.

It was the contrast that stood out most a European head of state moving through public streets without the heavy ceremony that often surrounds official visits.

The symbolism was difficult to ignore. Macron, a leader navigating increasingly complex global politics, running side by side with an athlete who has spent years redefining the limits of endurance sport.

Kipchoge himself has long become more than a sporting figure in Kenya. His phrase, “No human is limited,” is quoted far beyond athletics and has turned him into a national symbol of discipline and ambition.

By the time the jog ended near the summit venue, social media was flooded with videos and photos from stunned residents who had witnessed the unusual scene firsthand.

Nairobi has hosted presidents before. It has celebrated sporting heroes many times.

But for one brief morning, the city found itself watching both move together through its streets and it stopped almost everything else to take it in.
