Kenya’s football fraternity is mourning the death of legendary midfielder Allan Thigo, who passed away on Saturday evening at his home in Bungoma after a long battle with cancer at the age of 74.
Family members confirmed that the former Gor Mahia F.C. and Kenya national football team star will be cremated on Wednesday in Bungoma in accordance with his final wishes.
According to relatives, Thigo requested a private farewell with no public gathering, no ceremony and no communal meals during his send-off.
A Gor Mahia Midfield Maestro
Thigo remains one of the greatest figures in the history of Gor Mahia F.C.. He spent more than a decade at the club between 1970 and 1981, becoming a central figure in one of the most successful eras in Kenyan football.
During his remarkable career, the midfield maestro scored 88 goals for Gor Mahia, making him the club’s second-highest all-time scorer.
Beyond his performances on the pitch, Thigo also excelled in leadership roles. In a rare achievement, he served as both player and coach at Gor Mahia, guiding the club to an unbeaten league title in 1976.
He later steered the Kenyan giants to the final of the 1979 Africa Cup Winners’ Cup, cementing his legacy as one of the architects of the club’s continental rise.
His influence extended beyond statistics, with former players and supporters often describing him as a calm tactician and disciplined leader who inspired generations of Kenyan footballers.

At the international level, Allan Thigo earned more than 80 caps for Kenya national football team and played a crucial role in the squad that secured Kenya’s first-ever qualification to the Africa Cup of Nations in 1972.
His contributions to Kenyan football continue to resonate decades after his retirement, with many crediting him for helping shape the country’s football identity during the formative years of the national team.
