Serge Gnabry will not play at this summer’s World Cup. The Germany forward confirmed the news himself, bringing an abrupt end to hopes he might recover in time.
The 30-year-old, who plays for Bayern Munich, has been sidelined with a thigh injury. His club said over the weekend that he would be out for “an extended period”, fueling concern in Germany that one of their most reliable attackers would miss the tournament.
On Wednesday, Gnabry removed any doubt.
“The last few days have been tough to process,” he wrote on social media. “As for the World Cup dream with Germany, that’s sadly over for me.”
It is a heavy blow for both club and country. Gnabry has long been a fixture in the national team setup and remains one of their more consistent goal threats. Since making his debut, he has scored 26 goals in 59 appearances, a record that reflects both efficiency and trust from successive managers.
Germany’s current coach, Julian Nagelsmann, has leaned on Gnabry’s versatility and experience. His absence leaves a gap in an attacking line already under scrutiny as the team prepares for a demanding tournament across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
At Bayern, the timing is no less frustrating. The club has secured another Bundesliga title, but the season is not yet over. Gnabry’s injury deprives them of depth as they push to finish strongly on all fronts.
For the player, the focus now shifts to recovery.
“Like the rest of the country I’ll be supporting the boys from home,” he said. “Now it’s time to focus on getting back for pre-season.”
Injuries are an unavoidable part of football, but their timing can feel cruel. For Gnabry, this one arrives just as the world’s biggest stage comes into view, and then slips out of reach.
