Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine has strongly dismissed reports suggesting that his return to Uganda is subject to negotiations with the government, insisting that his homecoming is a fundamental right, not a privilege to be discussed.
In a sharply worded statement, Wine criticized media reports claiming ongoing talks between authorities and his party, the National Unity Platform (NUP), over what was described as a “dignified and secure” return.
“How can my rights and dignity be a subject of negotiation?” he posed.
The opposition figure maintained that framing his return as a negotiated process undermines both his constitutional rights and the broader democratic struggle in Uganda.
‘My Return Is a Right’ — Bobi Wine Declares
Reaffirming his position, Wine declared that he would soon return to Uganda regardless of the government’s position.
“My return to my home country is a right and I will soon return to Uganda, and the regime can do whatever they want,” he stated.
His remarks signal defiance against the administration of President Yoweri Museveni, with whom he has had a long-standing political rivalry marked by contested elections and allegations of repression.
Wine’s statement comes amid speculation that the Ugandan government may be easing its stance on opposition figures in exile. However, his outright rejection of any negotiations suggests that tensions remain high.
He further emphasized that his political challenge against Museveni is not unlawful.
“Standing against Museveni and beating him is only a crime in the eyes of NBS, not in the eyes of the law,” he asserted.
As anticipation builds around his return, Wine’s remarks are likely to energize supporters of the National Unity Platform while also raising questions about how the government will respond.
