How Months of Secret US–Israeli Intelligence Led to Khamenei’s Assassination

The strike that killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, was the culmination of months of joint US–Israeli intelligence preparation, according to Western officials and US media reports.

Contrary to expectations of a covert night-time operation, the attack was launched mid-morning on Saturday after what officials described as time-sensitive intelligence placed Khamenei at a compound in central Tehran alongside several senior military and intelligence figures. The window of opportunity appears to have accelerated an operation that had been under consideration for months.

US President Donald Trump suggested in a social media post that advanced intelligence capabilities were instrumental in locating the Iranian leader, citing “highly sophisticated tracking systems.” While operational details remain classified, analysts say such tracking typically combines human intelligence with technical surveillance, including signals interception and telecommunications monitoring.

During last year’s 12-day conflict, Israel was reported to have penetrated Iranian telecom networks to map the movements of nuclear scientists and senior officials. Tracking bodyguards and close associates can help build what intelligence services term a “pattern of life,” allowing planners to identify predictable routines and moments of vulnerability.

That Khamenei was successfully targeted despite heightened security raises questions about Iran’s counterintelligence effectiveness. It may indicate either systemic security failures or an ongoing ability by US and Israeli agencies to adapt surveillance methods faster than Tehran can mitigate them.

According to The New York Times, the intelligence cue originated with the CIA but was passed to Israel to execute the strike, reflecting what appears to be a division of labour: Washington focusing on intelligence and broader military targets, Israel on leadership strikes.

Israeli aircraft reportedly deployed around 30 munitions against the compound at approximately 09:40 local time. Given that Khamenei was believed to be operating from an underground bunker beneath the site, multiple bunker-penetrating weapons may have been used to ensure destruction of hardened structures.

Additional strikes hit other locations in Tehran, including the office of President Masoud Pezeshkian, who later confirmed he was unharmed. Iranian authorities have acknowledged the deaths of several senior defence officials, including Defence Council secretary Ali Shamkhani, Defence Minister Brig Gen Aziz Nasirzadeh and IRGC commander Gen Mohammad Pakpour.

At the time of the operation, President Trump and senior advisers were reportedly monitoring developments from Mar-a-Lago in Florida. Confirmation of Khamenei’s death took several hours.

Iran had reportedly prepared succession contingencies for the supreme leader and other key officials, suggesting Tehran had long considered such a scenario plausible. The strategic consequences of the assassination remain uncertain, particularly as the broader confrontation between Iran, Israel and the United States intensifies.
