Kenya’s political scene has erupted with reactions following the removal of Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General.
The decision has sparked sharp responses from across the political divide, with allies, critics, and party members expressing mixed sentiments over the development.
Kalonzo’s Silent Message
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka added intrigue to the unfolding drama after posting a photo alongside Sifuna without any accompanying caption.
The silent gesture was widely interpreted as a show of solidarity with the embattled senator from Kalonzo who is allied to the United Opposition.
Raila Odinga Jr. – “The Finest Steel Must Go Through the Hottest Fire”
Raila Odinga Jr. shared a cryptic but symbolic message amid the controversy, stating, “The finest steel must go through the hottest fire.”
His remarks were seen by many as encouragement to Sifuna, in the face of political adversity.
Winnie Odinga – “It Is Not Well”
East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Winnie Odinga offered a brief but pointed reaction, saying, “It is not well.”
Though short, her statement fueled speculation about internal tensions within ODM following Sifuna’s ouster.
Boniface Mwangi’s Fierce Defense
Activist Boniface Mwangi came out strongly in defense of Sifuna, praising him as a principled leader.
“Thank you, Edwin Sifuna, for being a principled leader and refusing to bend the knee to demagogue and dictator Kasongo. I believe you will continue to defend the ODM party from hyenas and sellouts. With or without the party, you remain an important voice for the people of Kenya,” Mwangi stated.
His comments added a fiery tone to the discourse, framing Sifuna’s removal as politically motivated.
Alfred Keter – “ODM Is Dead”
Former Nandi Hills MP Alfred Keter escalated the debate, declaring “ODM is dead!”
He called for leaders including Edwin Sifuna, Babu Owino, Ndindi Nyoro, Anthony Kibagendi, Caleb Amisi, Naisula Lesuuda and Crystal Asige to come together and register a new political party.
“Vitu kwa ground ni different! They will not believe it! Wantam is Wantam!” Keter added, suggesting shifting political dynamics on the ground.
Ekuru Aukot – “Hyenas Have Eaten One of Their Own”
Thirdway Alliance leader Ekuru Aukot referenced the late John Keen’s famous words following the assassination of JM Kariuki, stating, “The hyenas have eaten one of their own.”
Aukot claimed that Senator Sifuna had been politically consumed by his own party, adding that Siaya Governor James Orengo had earlier predicted such a fallout.
A Party at a Crossroads?
Sifuna’s removal appears to have exposed simmering tensions within ODM, with reactions reflecting deep divisions both inside and outside the party.
As the dust settles, the political implications of Sifuna’s exit from the powerful Secretary General position could shape realignments ahead of future electoral contests.
