Chelsea legend John Obi Mikel has expressed strong optimism about the future of the Kenya National Football Team, praising the quality of talent coming through and encouraging sustained investment in youth development.

Speaking during his visit to Kenya, the former Super Eagles captain said he was impressed by the skill level he witnessed, noting that the senior national team is well-positioned for success going forward.

“The skills I saw here today show there’s no question that the senior team is going to have a lot of talent. Whoever takes over will inherit a very good team, and I wish them all the best,” Mikel said.

Confidence in Harambee Stars’ Growth

Mikel added that Kenya’s presence in international tournaments always raises the quality and excitement of competitions, underlining the country’s growing football reputation.

“It’s always nice when Kenya is in a tournament. It’s always a good tournament to watch,” he remarked.

The former Chelsea midfielder also voiced his support for the current technical setup, singling out head coach Benny McCarthy for praise.

“Benny is a good guy and a good coach. I wish him all the best and I hope he continues to develop the national team,” Mikel stated.

Strong Call for Youth and Academy Development

Beyond the senior side, Mikel emphasized the importance of grassroots football, urging stakeholders to invest heavily in academies and young players, whom he described as the foundation of long-term success.

“It’s important to watch the kids in the academies because they are always the next big thing. Hopefully, the next Messi, the next Gerrard, or the next Cristiano Ronaldo will come out of here one day,” he said.

Mikel concluded by expressing hope that Kenyan football will continue its upward trajectory, backed by structured development and opportunities for young talent to shine on the global stage.
