Defending champions Ivory Coast begin their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 title defence on Wednesday with a Group F clash against Mozambique in Marrakech.

Kick-off at the Grand Stadium of Marrakech is set for 6:30pm local time, as the Elephants look to start their campaign with authority and avoid the early struggles that marked their dramatic title-winning run at AFCON 2023.

Ivory Coast arrive in Morocco carrying high expectations after lifting the trophy on home soil last year, despite finishing third in their group and changing head coach mid-tournament. Emerse Faé, who took charge during that chaotic campaign and guided the team to glory, remains at the helm and is keen on a calmer, more controlled start this time.

The Elephants boast one of the strongest squads at the tournament, featuring Europe-based stars such as Amad Diallo, Wilfried Zaha, and midfield leader Franck Kessié. However, they will begin without striker Sébastien Haller, who was ruled out with injury shortly before the tournament.

Historically, Ivory Coast hold a clear edge over Mozambique. The two sides have met seven times in all competitions, with the Ivorians unbeaten, recording five wins and two draws. At AFCON finals, Ivory Coast have won both previous meetings — a 3-0 victory in 1986 and a 1-0 win in 1996.

Mozambique, making their sixth AFCON appearance, are still chasing their first-ever win at the finals and have never progressed beyond the group stage. They finished second behind Mali in qualifying and arrive hoping to change their tournament history.

The Mambas will rely on experienced defenders such as Reinildo and Mexer, as well as attacking threat Geny Catamo, to challenge the reigning champions. However, the task is a tough one in a competitive group that also includes Cameroon and Gabon.

Ivory Coast will be aiming to become the first defending champions since Egypt in 2010 to retain the AFCON title. A convincing opening performance against Mozambique would send a strong message to the rest of the tournament.
