Kenya’s David Munyua faces Kevin Doets in round two after a historic comeback win at the World Darts Championship.
Kenyan darts player David Munyua will be back on the Alexandra Palace stage on Monday as he takes on Dutchman Kevin Doets in the second round of the PDC World Darts Championship.
Munyua made global headlines last Thursday after pulling off a dramatic comeback to beat world number 18 Mike De Decker 3–2 in the opening round. He recovered from two sets down in a performance that announced his arrival on the world stage.
The 30-year-old veterinarian now faces a tougher test against Doets, who is ranked world number 41. The Dutch player is experienced at this level, having won the 2019 Catalonia Open and two PDC Challenge Tour titles. He also reached the last 16 at last year’s World Championships.
Munyua’s qualification for round two has already earned him about Sh4.3 million in prize money, marking one of the biggest moments in Kenyan darts history.
Despite the achievement, Munyua said the win came as a surprise even to him. He described the moment as important not just for himself, but for Kenya and Africa, adding that it could help the sport grow in the region.
He said staying calm and trusting his game helped him turn the match around against De Decker, noting that it was a do-or-die situation against a top opponent.
Munyua’s performance has drawn praise both locally and internationally. President William Ruto led the tributes, congratulating him for making history as the first Kenyan to compete at the PDC World Darts Championship and urging him to keep pushing for the title.
As he prepares to face Doets, Munyua will be hoping to extend his fairytale run and produce another shock on darts’ biggest stage.
