Bobi Wine Fires Warning Ahead of Election Battle With Museveni

Bobi Wine

Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine has raised the political temperature ahead of the country’s forthcoming elections, warning that the contest against long-serving President Yoweri Museveni is likely to be fiercely confrontational.

Speaking in a recent interview with CNN, the musician-turned-politician accused President Museveni of treating Uganda as his personal property and the population as subjects rather than citizens.

“General Museveni sees Uganda as his personal property and us as his slaves,” Bobi Wine said.

“This is not an election, this is war.”

Bobi Wine Rematch With Museveni

Bobi Wine, the leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP), is preparing for another electoral showdown with Museveni, who has been in power since 1986.

The opposition figure has positioned himself as the leading challenger to the incumbent, especially among Uganda’s youth, who make up a significant portion of the electorate.

Reflecting on the 2021 presidential election, which he contested and lost, Bobi Wine maintained that the outcome did not reflect the will of the people.

“If 2021 was a free election, I would be President already,” he said, describing the political and security environment at the time as hostile to opposition participation.

Uganda’s Democracy Under Scrutiny

The upcoming elections are expected to draw intense scrutiny from local and international observers, amid longstanding concerns over political freedoms, the conduct of security forces, and the overall integrity of Uganda’s electoral process.

As Bobi Wine seeks to dethrone Museveni, the incumbent is equally determined to retain power, setting the stage for a tense and closely watched political battle.
