In a moment many in Kenya’s music industry have long hoped for, Nyashinski has signed a recording deal with Sony Music — a move that could change how the world hears East African music.
The rapper, known for blending sharp lyricism with emotional depth, will debut the partnership with Tai Chi, a new single paired with a cinematic video. The track, he says, tells “a story of resilience, success, and the hustle that defines Nairobi life.”
“This partnership with Sony Music is more than just a deal,” Nyashinski said in a statement. “It’s a recognition of East Africa’s rich musical talent and a platform to showcase our stories to the world.”
For Sony, the agreement reflects a growing interest in the region’s creative power. Sean Watson, Sony Music Africa’s managing director, called Nyashinski “everything the world needs to see from East Africa — authenticity, versatility, longevity, and artistic excellence.” He added: “This partnership is about more than music; it’s about elevating the culture and giving East African voices the global platform they deserve.”
Nyashinski’s journey has been far from straightforward. He first rose to fame in the early 2000s with Kleptomaniax, a rap trio that helped define Kenya’s urban sound. After a break from music during years spent in the United States, he returned in 2015 with a string of hits that solidified his status as one of the country’s most respected artists.
His career has since spanned collaborations with African stars such as Sauti Sol, Juma Jux, and Patoranking, along with appearances on Coke Studio Africa alongside Yemi Alade, Trey Songz, and Mafikizolo. Brands including Johnnie Walker, Samsung, TECNO, and Safaricom have also sought his voice and image.
Christine ‘Seven’ Mosha, who heads Sony Music Eastern Africa, said the signing was “a milestone” for the label. “Nyashinski embodies the spirit of innovation and authenticity that our label strives to promote,” she said. “We are excited to support his journey as he inspires a new generation of artists and fans across the continent.”
As part of the deal, Nyashinski’s earlier music will return to global streaming platforms, giving new listeners access to the songs that helped shape Kenya’s modern music scene.
The announcement is more than an artist’s win. It is a signal that East Africa’s cultural moment is not just
