Kenya’s First Female Air Force Commander Fatuma Ahmed Retires After 42 Years
Defense Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya on Friday led a farewell ceremony for Major General (Rtd) Fatuma Gaiti Ahmed at the Defence Headquarters in Nairobi, marking the end of a landmark 42-year military career.

Major General Ahmed, who made history in 2018 as the first woman in Kenya to be promoted to the rank of Major General, officially exited the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) after decades of service across various military roles. In 2024, she became the first woman to head a KDF service branch, taking command of the Kenya Air Force.

“Your career has been defined by commitment, courage, and integrity,” CS Tuya said during the ceremony. “You opened doors for countless others and set a high standard for leadership.”
Born in Kenya’s North Eastern region, Ahmed joined the military in 1983. Her rise through the ranks challenged traditional gender roles and inspired change within Kenya’s defense forces. Her leadership not only broke ceilings but helped pave the way for more inclusive representation in the armed forces.
Throughout her career, she received commendations for professionalism and service excellence. Her elevation to leadership in a predominantly male-dominated institution symbolized a growing shift in the perception and inclusion of women in national security roles.
Major General Ahmed’s retirement comes at a time when Kenya continues to review and modernize its defense strategy with a focus on gender integration and youth inclusion.
Her departure leaves a lasting legacy in the Kenya Defence Forces. As the military charts its next chapter, her story remains a powerful reference point for women pursuing careers in defense and leadership.
