President William Ruto has nominated Douglas Kanja as the Inspector General of Police following the resignation of Koome. This nomination awaits approval by Parliament. In the interim, Deputy Inspector General Gilbert Masengeli will serve as the Acting Inspector General.
Douglas Kanja, the nominee for Inspector General, has had a distinguished career in law enforcement. Before this nomination, Kanja served as the Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police, Commandant of the General Service Unit for five years. His tenure was marked by efforts to modernize the police force and improve operational efficiency. Kanja has been instrumental in several key reforms and initiatives aimed at enhancing public safety and security across the nation.
Eliud Kipkoech Lagat has been appointed as the new Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police. Lagat, known for his strategic approach to policing, previously held senior positions within the police force, including heading various provincial and regional police units.
Gilbert Masengeli, who will act as the Inspector General until Kanja’s approval, has been appointed as the Deputy Inspector General of the Administration Police. Masengeli brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having previously served in multiple capacities within the Administration Police. His leadership has been characterized by a focus on community policing and strengthening the relationship between the police and the communities they serve.
