Japhet Koome has resigned from his position as the Inspector General of the National Police Service.
Koome’s resignation was announced by State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed in a statement sent to newsrooms on Friday, July 14.
“His Excellency William Samoei Ruto, PhD, CGH, President and Commander in Chief of the Defence Forces, has on this 12th day of July, 2024, accepted the resignation of Eng. Japheth N. Koome, MGH, as the Inspector General of the National Police Service,” reads the statement in part.

The changes made by the National Police Service Commission within the senior ranks of the National Police Service have been duly noted by the Head of State and Government on behalf of the National Security Council (NSC).
“The Head of State and Government has, on behalf of the National Security Council (NSC), noted the changes effected by the National Police Service Commission within the senior ranks of the National Police Service.”
Until the nomination, parliamentary approval, and appointment of a new police Inspector-General, the Head of State has appointed Douglas Kanja, the current Deputy-Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service, as the acting Inspector-General of the National Police Service.
“Pending the nomination, parliamentary approval, and appointment of the Inspector-General of the National Police Service, the Head of State has designated Mr. Douglas Kanja, CBS, the Deputy-Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service, as the acting Inspector-General of the National Police Service.”
Eliud Langat is set to become the Acting Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service, while James Kamau will assume the role of Acting Deputy Inspector General of the Administration Police Service.
The President, representing the National Security Council (NSC), acknowledged the recent adjustments made by the National Police Service Commission within the upper echelons of the police service.
Ruto commended the outgoing Inspector-General for his dedication and contributions to the nation, wishing him success in his future endeavours. The announced changes in the Homeland Security agencies are effective immediately.
