According to authorities, a 6.8 magnitude earthquake in Morocco has claimed more than 2,100 lives. Many of the fatalities are reported in remote regions south of Marrakech, and there are worries that one such town could have 2,000 casualties all on its own.
According to the Moroccan military, the death toll from the earthquake has increased from 2,012 to 2,122. Up from 2,059, at least 2,421 persons have sustained injuries. Experts have cautioned that when rescuers reach isolated rural areas and search efforts continue, the death toll might keep rising.

The deadliest earthquake to strike Morocco in more than 60 years also left survivors scrambling to find food, water, and shelter on Sunday as the search for the missing went on in isolated settlements. According to state TV, Morocco indicated it would accept aid proposals from other nations and would seek to organize them if necessary.
In a written statement, United States President Joe Biden expressed his “deep sadness” over the deaths and destruction brought on by the earthquake in Morocco. The statement said, our thoughts and prayers are with all those impacted by this terrible hardship. My administration is in contact with Moroccan officials. We are working expeditiously to ensure American citizens in Morocco are safe and stand ready to provide any necessary assistance for the Moroccan people. The United States stands by Morocco and my friend King Mohammed VI at this difficult moment.
When it struck at 11:11 p.m. local time, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake had a 6.8 magnitude and caused several seconds of trembling. The National Seismic Monitoring and Alert Network of Morocco recorded the earthquake as a 7 on the Richter scale. A 19-minute aftershock with a magnitude of 4.9 was registered by the American agency.
