As days go by, Ukraine ‘s casualties have risen dramatically, as reported by unnamed US officials. This reality emerges from the heart of the conflict, where brave individuals like Margo are tasked with the responsibility of accounting for the fallen.
Margo, stationed near the front line in Donetsk, shares a unique connection with the departed.
“It may sound weird… but I’m the one who wants to apologize for their deaths. I want to thank them somehow. It’s as if they can hear, but they can’t respond,” she said.

In a nation that withholds official war casualty figures, Margo’s role becomes crucial. Despite Ukraine’s secrecy, US officials’ estimates of 70,000 dead and 120,000 injured cast a chilling light on the scale of loss.
This figure is especially staggering when considered against the backdrop of an armed forces half a million strong.
The toll is etched in Margo’s eyes as she recounts the heart-wrenching stories of young lives lost for their homeland.
“The hardest is when you see a dead young guy who hasn’t even reached 20, 22 years old. And realizing they didn’t die their own death,” she says.
The recent escalation, particularly the counter-offensive in the south, has intensified the tragedy. “Worse than Bakhmut,” laments a brigade commander, recalling the fierce battles that marked the fall of Donetsk to Russia. Ukrainian losses surged, with newly trained soldiers dying “by the dozens” daily, leaving a trail of grief-stricken families.
Amidst the haunting unknown soldiers piled high in mortuaries, the quest to identify the fallen unfolds. Body bags are brought out one by one, each containing stories of lives cut short. Margo’s role in recording these particulars is more than a job; it’s a testament to the lives lost.
