Wizkid Becomes First African To Win BRIT Billion Award

Grammy award-winning Nigerian artiste, Ayodeji Balogun aka Wizkid has become the first African artist to win the BRIT Billion Award for over one-billion streams in the United Kingdom.

Wizkid’s songs; Essence, Made in Lagos and Brown-skin girl have collectively gathered one billion streams. Starboy was awarded after his latest achievement of performing at the Tottenham Stadium in London, which holds a capacity of 62,850. He became the first and only African artist to ever headline and perform at the esteemed venue.

Wizkid has sold millions of units in the UK including Energy with Skepta and Essence with Tems, which are certified as Platinum. One dance with Drake and Kyla has certified six times Platinum for selling over 3.6 million units. Come closer with Drake and Brown-Skin girl with Beyoncé are certified Gold. His fourth studio album, Made in Lagos is also certified Gold in the United Kingdom.

Wizkid rose to fame back in 2011 with his hit song Caro and made history in 2016 when he became the first Nigerian artist to top the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. Thanks to his hit collaboration One Dance alongside Drake.

The release of Wizkid’s fourth album, Made in Lagos increased his global influence with the album standout, Essence becoming an instant hit. He went on to achieve a groundbreaking feat by filling up the O2 Arena for three consecutive days.
