Resilient Restaurant Owner Triumphs Over Prolonged Discrimination

Beverly Kim, the co-owner of a restaurant with her husband shares the experience she has had to face for owning a successful restaurant in America.

Kim’s parents moved to the US from Korea in the 1970s. Even though she was American, people perceived that she was different because of her looks.

She had to go through the dislike from kids telling her that she should go back to her country. Despite the hate and remarks from people, Kim’s restaurant won awards for its Korean American food and this outcome highly motivated her to push harder and block the noises.  

“In the end, It’s all learning from what was the gift from this pain and that gift is going to propel you to something beautiful.” Kim said.

The lady has actively taken a role in breaking down hate since the start of the global Covid 19 pandemic by spearheading a national campaign called Do Something. There has been an increase in anti-Asian harassment, discrimination, and violence across the country.

The community works on uniting dozens of restaurants to fund the fight of racism against the Asian American Pacific Islander or AAPI community.

“It’s a reference to do something because sometimes we feel helpless in these situations of how to help and everyone can help in very small ways. Misinformation leads to hate and the hate leads to violence.” Kim added.

Kim’s achievements have now been recognized by the mayor of Chicago, praising her work and contributions to the AAPI community. While she aims to bring further light to the Asian issues, she is also tapping into her own experiences to advance additional goals and aspirations.

Kim started the community, a nonprofit that supports working mothers in the hospitality industry by providing resources. “I know having a community is really important, It’s like everyone chipping in and it will create a difference.”

By doing all these, Kim proves that she is more than a restaurant owner inspired to create a better society by breaking down barriers across society’s key intersections.
