Kenya’s first lady Rachel Ruto has on Wednesday, March 8 established skills program for female inmates at the Lang’ata Women’s Prison in Nairobi county.
The program, known as Carakana is a program which will converge different skills to the women at a beneficial manner, hence resulting to work output to the society.
While addressing the inmates at the Lang’ata on March 8, Rechael Ruto said that the program is set to kick off in all 47 counties in the country.
“Our relaunch today is two ways; to increase the number of beneficiaries in the five women prisons that we are already working with and second to grow our reach to all the 44 women prisons in the country holding a total of six thousand women,” Rachel Ruto said.
The women’s prisons that have already benefitted from the program include; Kakamega, Nakuru, Kitale, and Lang’ata women’s prisons respectively.
According to Rachel, other skills for example creative arts, basketry, and knitting will be encompassed in the Carakana program.
Carakana program is an elevation to her previous project kick-started in 2016, dubbed International Cross Stitch. During that time, over 1500 women benefited from the project.
“The women have produced quality artifacts that have earned them over 5.15 million shillings,”

It was during this visit that the Principal Secretary for correctional services Mary Muthoni, who had accompanied the first lady, announced the department’s plans to launch a prisons campaign, one prisoner one bed, which will aim at restoring the dignity of prisoners countrywide.

She urged Kenyans to come aboard the campaign through donations, to ensure its 100% success.
“We do not want people sleeping on the floor anymore in this country. If you want to change the world, go back and make your bed,”
