Humphrey Kayange and Collins Injera are well-known names in Kenya. The two brothers shaped rugby in Kenya through Shujaa and this is sadly the end of an era

Shujaa teammate and brother Humphrey Kayange has penned an emotional message for his brother Collins Injera who retired from playing rugby on 24th January.

A special feeling to play with your brother, and the two were privileged to have lived the dream. Kayange expressed gratitude to his brother saying his experience was enhanced by his presence.

The brothers represented Kenya at the World Rugby Sevens Sevens, winning the Singapore Sevens leg in 2016. They were also key members of the Mwamba team that captured the Enterprise Cup in 2013 and the National Sevens Circuit in 2011.

Oduor Gangla, the chairman of the Kenya Rugby Union, thanked Kayange, 39, who announced his retirement following the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, “There couldn’t be a more impactful player to receive this award, he cements his place in the annals of history as one of the greats of the game.”

36-year-old Injera, on the other hand, scored two tries in the Singapore Sevens Final in which Kenya won 30-7, their only title to date in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.

Injera’s final appearance was in Cape Town at the RWC Sevens 2022 last September where Shujaa finished in 12th place. With 279 tries in his career, Injera is the second-highest try scorer in the history of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series and the leading try scorer for Kenya’s men’s national sevens team.

Kayange, in his message, said:

“Collo, looking back at your career, I am going through the mixed emotions that come with the game. From re-living sporting moments where you lose more games than you win – to reflecting on the memorable occasions that leave a smile on our faces.

“My rugby journey became more special when you, my brother, my teammate, and my friend, joined me in the world of Sevens Rugby.”

“Your retirement this week from international rugby also causes these mixed emotions – a time to celebrate achievement and a time of change,

“You have been the embodiment of skill, commitment, passion, and work ethic that has lit up so many Sevens destinations around the world,” Kayange said, lauding his Injera’s commitment above his achievement.
