Guinness World Records has confirmed that an image of Lionel Messi lifting the World Cup trophy in Qatar has amassed over 69 million likes and counting. The elusive trophy is seen by many as the biggest achievement in world football and Messi, arguably the Greatest Of All Time (G.OA.T.), endeared himself to the hearts of Argentinians and football lovers across the world by lifting the most coveted trophy in football.
Officially, the World Cup trophy is described as ‘solid’ gold. It is 36.5cm tall and is made of 6.175kg (75%) gold. It has a base of 13cm in diameter which features two strips of malachite. Argentina lifted the trophy in Qatar after a 36-year drought.
The previous holder of the most-liked photo on Instagram was that of an egg by British Advertising Executive Chris Godfrey, according to BBC. Yes, we did that. Lionel Messi World Cup Triumph photo brought in plenty of attention to the app that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerburg commented on his Facebook page. The Meta CEO wrote, “Leo Messi’s World Cup post is now the most liked in Instagram history. WhatsApp also reached a record 25 million messages per second during the final.”

Despite Messi having the most-liked Instagram post of all time, his rival on the pitch, Cristiano Ronaldo, is still the most-followed user on the platform with 520 million followers.
Forbes reports that Messi has gained 25.8 million Instagram followers in the past 30 days since the World Cup tournament kicked off.
