Winnie Odinga clinches on the EALA nominee list

Inside Politics; The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party has nominated Winnie Odinga to the East African Legislative Assembly-EALA.

Raila Odinga’s daughter was systematically listed among the six nominees in the list released by the party on Wednesday, November 9, 2022, in Nairobi, Kenya.

The party’s selection committee, headed by the deputy party leader Wycliffe Oparanya made a meeting yesterday on Tuesday and nominated the following to EALA; Mohammed Diriye-Wajir county, Beatrice Askul of Turkana county, Winnie Odinga of Nairobi, Suleiman Shahbal-Mombasa, Timothy Bosire from Nyamira county, and Justus Kizito of Kakamega county respectively.

The nominees will be presented to parliament for the vetting process and approval of their suitability for the EALA slots before the joint Committee on the election of the East Africa Legislative Assembly.

Signifying the process, major political parties in parliament will nominate their respective nominees for the nine (9) available slots for Kenya in the Arusha-based Assembly.

The initial list seen by the media placed the number of individuals interested in the position from the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya at ninety-six (96).

On the other hand, Kenya Kwanza Coalition has a total of one hundred forty-five (145) applicants seeking only five (5) slots.

Notably, each party is expected to send back a maximum of three (3) names for each position. The process notifies that for the nine slots, twenty-seven (27) names will be sent to the committee for a vetting process.

In addition, the committee will file the final report and table it in the two Houses which are the Senate and National Assembly of Kenya for debate before the voting process is conducted.

At the the EALA only Kenya and the DRC, which is a new member, are yet to submit the names of their elected representatives.

Finally, the EALA Elections Act, 2011 simply provides a new assembly that is elected within ninety (90) days before the expiry of the term of the subsisting assembly.
