All You need to Know about Eid-al Adha

Eid-al Adha

There are two main “Eids” that Muslims observe, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. The word “Eid” signifies a festival or feast in Arabic.

The first Eid is known as Eid al-Fitr, which means “holiday of breaking the fast” in Arabic. Ramadan is a lunar month during which Muslims fast every day from sunrise to sunset.

Eid al- Adha

It is one of the five pillars of the Islamic faith and is also known as Sawm. The first verses of the Quran were revealed to Prophet Muhammad during the month of Ramadan.

At the conclusion of the yearly Hajj journey to Mecca, Eid al-Adha, which is typically regarded as the holy of the two Eid holidays, occurs around two months after Eid al-Fitr.

The Islamic lunar calendar ensures that both holidays always have the same distance apart. Dates are adjusted annually because the 365-day Gregorian calendar used in the West is about 11 days longer.

The final day of the annual Hajj trip to Mecca, the holiest city in Islam, is observed as Eid al-Adha in western Saudi Arabia. Two million Muslims  travel to Mecca for the five-day Hajj pilgrimage each year, which is required of all Muslims who are fully able to do so.

The celebration of Eid al-Adha, also known as the “Feast of
Sacrifice,” honors the Prophet Ibrahim, also known as Abraham in
Christianity and Judaism, for his willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail at
Allah’s command. It is a significant holiday in Islam.

The festival, which lasts three to four days and is observed by millions of Muslims worldwide, starts on the tenth day of the Muslim lunar month of Dhul-Hijja, which coincides with the Hajj, the yearly trip to Mecca.

Allah intervenes, preventing Ibrahim from killing Ismail by sending the Angel Jibreel, or Gabriel, along with a ram to offer in its place. The final day of the Hajj pilgrimage, which is the fifth pillar of Islam, is when Eid al-Adha is celebrated.

The day is customarily spent in celebration with family, friends, and loved ones, frequently donning new or best clothing, and giving gifts.
