Messi Makes History as Argentina Start Strong

Lionel Messi delivered another chapter in his remarkable career on Tuesday night, scoring a hat-trick as Argentina opened their World Cup title defence with a commanding 3-0 victory over Algeria.
A crowd of 69,045 at Kansas City Stadium was treated to a vintage performance from the Argentina captain. Three goals were scored. Another record was matched.
With the treble, Messi moved level with German great Miroslav Klose on 16 World Cup goals, the most in the tournament’s history.
The result also carried added significance for Argentina. Their previous attempts to defend a World Cup crown had begun with defeats in 1982 and 1990. This time, a winning start was secured.
A Moment of Magic

The breakthrough arrived in the 17th minute.
A pass was received from Rodrigo De Paul. Space was created on the edge of the area. A curling effort was then sent beyond goalkeeper Luca Zidane and into the bottom corner.
The goal settled Argentina after a frantic opening period in which efforts from both sides had been ruled out.
Algeria threatened in spells and showed energy on the counter-attack. Yet clear chances were limited as Argentina gradually took control.
Algeria Made to Pay
The second goal arrived just after the hour mark.
A mistake by Zidane was punished. Messi reacted quickest and finished from close range to double Argentina’s lead.
Any hopes of an Algerian comeback were ended in the 76th minute.
Nicolás González supplied the pass. Messi took possession outside the box before driving a powerful strike into the net to complete his first World Cup hat-trick.
The achievement was warmly celebrated by Argentina supporters, many of whom had travelled across the United States to watch the defending champions.
Record Books Rewritten Again

History was made long before the final whistle.
Messi became the first footballer to appear in six men’s World Cups. His latest international appearance was also reported as his 200th for Argentina.
At 38, questions had been asked about whether the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner should continue at international level after lifting the World Cup in Qatar.
They were answered emphatically.
A hat-trick was scored. A record was matched. Argentina’s ambitions were underlined.
Algeria Show Fight
The scoreline did not fully reflect Algeria’s effort.
The North Africans competed bravely and pressed aggressively for long periods. They were unfortunate to see an early goal disallowed and remained organised for much of the contest.
However, the difference was found in the final third, where Messi’s quality proved decisive.
Looking Ahead
Argentina now sit in a strong position in Group J and will face Austria in their next match.
Algeria will attempt to recover when they take on Jordan.
For Argentina, the focus remains on retaining the trophy.
For Messi, another record now appears within reach.
One more World Cup goal would leave him standing alone at the top of the tournament’s all-time scoring list.
