Forty-five people have been charged in connection with an incident in Kajiado where President William Ruto’s convoy was allegedly blocked during a tense public encounter marked by chants of “Wantam”.
The suspects appeared in court following the incident, which drew immediate attention from security agencies and political leaders.
According to court proceedings, the group is accused of obstructing the presidential motorcade during its movement through the area. Authorities say the situation briefly disrupted movement before order was restored.
Witnesses reported that the crowd chanted “Wantam” during the confrontation, a slogan that has recently surfaced in political spaces and online discussions. The meaning and intent behind the chants have been widely debated, with supporters and critics interpreting them differently.
Security officers intervened to disperse the crowd and ensure the convoy continued its journey safely. No injuries were immediately reported.
The prosecution told the court that investigations are ongoing, and more arrests could follow as authorities review video footage and eyewitness accounts.
The accused individuals are expected to remain in custody or be released on bond depending on the court’s ruling as the case proceeds.
The incident adds to growing political tension in parts of the country where public demonstrations and presidential engagements have increasingly drawn heightened security presence.
