Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan has taken 90 days away from office. The leave began on September 7, following the death of her husband, Hafidh Ameir.
The announcement was made by Chief Secretary Moses Kusiluka. In a statement dated September 8, he said state duties would continue under the country’s legal framework.
Duties Handed to Officials
Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi and Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba will handle government duties during the period.
“Further information will be provided by the relevant authorities as necessary,” Kusiluka said.
The arrangement allows government business to continue while the president mourns her husband.
Husband Dies in Zanzibar
Ameir died on September 7 at about 8 a.m. He had been receiving treatment at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar. Vice President Ndejembi said Ameir had been treated for a heart condition. He was 80 years old.
His body was later taken to southern Zanzibar. He was buried the same day in Kazimkazi, in South Unguja.
Condolences From Leaders
Messages of condolence have been sent to Tanzania’s first family. Regional leaders have also paid tribute to Ameir. Among those who offered condolences was Kenya’s President William Ruto. His message was shared as tributes were made to the late first gentleman.
The president’s absence from public duties comes as Tanzania continues with normal government operations.
A Period of Mourning
The 90-day leave gives President Suluhu time to mourn her husband and be with her family.
Government responsibilities will meanwhile remain in the hands of senior officials. Further details on the president’s schedule are expected to be released by authorities when necessary.
