African leaders and French government officials met to launch an ambitious initiative aimed at strengthening cooperation between the two sides. The Africa Forward Summit, held on 12 May 2026, set out a clear vision to boost economic growth, deepen innovation, and tackle security challenges across the continent.

“This is a momentous occasion,” said a senior African official attending the summit. “We recognise Africa’s vast potential on the world stage, but unlocking it requires true collaboration.”

The summit’s declaration outlined a comprehensive agenda touching on peace and security, sustainable agriculture, health, energy, digital transformation, and more. At the heart of the agreement lies a commitment to respect each other’s sovereignty, shared responsibility, and fair cooperation.

On security, the partners stressed the importance of African-led solutions, particularly through the African Union’s Peace and Security Architecture. This includes backing regional efforts to confront terrorism, combat illicit trade, and stabilise hotspots such as the Sahel, Horn of Africa, and Great Lakes region.

A French diplomat added, “Our support for African peace operations is firm, but it must always respect the principle that Africans must lead the dialogue and mediation efforts.”

Economic aims were equally ambitious. Rather than relying on exporting raw materials, the declaration emphasizes developing value-added industries,agro-processing, clean energy manufacturing, and blue economy initiatives among others to boost jobs and resilience. In agriculture, for instance, the partners seek to foster climate-smart farming and integrate rural youth into the workforce.

The health sector is also poised for collaboration, focusing on improving access to primary care, vaccine production, and pandemic preparedness, with a nod to the emerging “One Health” approach that connects human, animal, and environmental health.

Digital transformation received top billing, with calls to close the digital divide and promote African ownership over data and AI technologies. This push aims to advance innovation while protecting human rights and cultural diversity.

Financing remains a critical concern. The summit urged reforms in global financial institutions to better represent African interests and unlock investment aligned with African priorities. It also emphasised innovative financial mechanisms, including blended financing and public-private partnerships, to fund infrastructure and sustainable development projects.

Yet, participants acknowledged the broader challenges. Global economic instability, geopolitical tensions, and the consequences of ongoing conflicts such as the Middle East crisis, cast long shadows over Africa’s prospects.

“Global imbalances and volatile markets affect African economies disproportionately,” said the Kenyan co-chair of the summit. “This dialogue is vital to ensure Africa’s voice is heard at key international forums.”

The summit’s call for a more equitable international system included backing for a reformed United Nations Security Council, reflecting Africa’s demographic weight and growing geopolitical relevance.

Critics might ask whether these ambitious goals will translate into tangible progress, especially given the continent’s political and economic diversity. However, many welcomed the spirit of the declaration.

A trade expert noted, “This document isn’t just a roadmap; it’s a statement of intent to shift from aid dependency to equal partnership, where Africa is both a producer and a market.”

The agreement concludes with a clear call to action: governments, businesses, civil society, and international partners must work hand in hand to turn words into results. As one summit participant succinctly put it, “Africa’s future is in its hands and its partnerships. This declaration is a foundation, now comes the hard work.”
