President William Ruto has issued a stern warning to Kenyans living abroad, urging them to treat information from social media platforms with caution.
Speaking to Kenyans in Italy, the Head of State emphasized that much of the content circulating online does not accurately reflect the situation on the ground in Kenya.
Ruto argued that misinformation and disinformation have become widespread, distorting the government’s achievements and misleading the public, particularly those in the diaspora who rely heavily on digital platforms for updates.
‘Unpatriotic Kenyans’ Accused of Spreading Propaganda
In his address, the President criticized a section of Kenyans whom he described as “unpatriotic,” accusing them of deliberately spreading false narratives online.
According to Ruto, such individuals are using propaganda as a political tool to influence public opinion and mobilize citizens against the government.
He maintained that a significant portion of social media content about Kenya is inaccurate, stating that “most of the stories in social media are not correct,” and that a large percentage amounts to misinformation and outright disinformation.
Call for Positive National Outlook
Ruto further challenged Kenyans, both at home and abroad, to adopt a more positive outlook about the country.
He cautioned against what he termed as the “demonization” of Kenya, questioning the motives of those who portray the nation negatively on global platforms.
The President urged citizens to “work on the software” of their mindset, advocating for a shift toward constructive engagement and national pride.
He stressed the importance of presenting a balanced and factual image of Kenya, especially to the international community.
The Commander in Chief, encouraged the diaspora to seek credible sources of information to better understand the country’s progress and challenges, rather than relying solely on unverified online content.
