The forward, benched for a third straight match, says he feels pushed out and hints next week’s Brighton game could be his last for the club.
Mohamed Salah has delivered his strongest public criticism of Liverpool after being left on the bench for the third game in a row, saying he feels the club has “thrown him under the bus” and made him responsible for their poor start to the season. His comments came after Liverpool’s 3-3 draw at Leeds on Saturday, a match in which the forward did not play.
Salah said he was shocked to sit out another full game and suggested that he no longer understands his place under Arne Slot. He said that despite his long record at the club, he feels unfairly targeted and believes someone within Liverpool wants him to take the blame for recent results. He refused to name who he was referring to.
The forward also hinted that next week’s home match against Brighton could be his final appearance before leaving for the Africa Cup of Nations. He said he has no clarity about his role and that he may not return to Liverpool after the tournament. Salah said he has always supported the club and planned to finish his career at Anfield but now feels the situation has changed.
Salah has scored four league goals this season, one from the penalty spot, and has faced criticism for his defensive work as Liverpool struggle to defend their title. He said he feels let down after signing a contract extension earlier this year, claiming promises made to him have not been kept.
He also expressed hurt that he does not feel protected by the club or by public voices around Liverpool. Salah pointed to how other top strikers are defended in difficult moments and said he does not receive the same treatment. He added that he remains proud of what he has achieved but cannot accept the current situation.
Interest from the Saudi Pro League has been ongoing, but Salah declined to say whether that will be his next move. He said he still loves Liverpool but does not understand why his relationship with the manager and club leadership has changed so quickly. He also said he never imagined having to think about leaving in this way, only months after winning major individual awards.
