Maresca’s Comments Raise Questions After Chelsea Beat Everton

Chelsea returned to winning ways with a 2–0 victory over Everton at Stamford Bridge, but the focus quickly shifted to manager Enzo Maresca after he made puzzling comments about feeling unsupported.

Speaking after the match, Maresca said the past 48 hours had been the hardest since he joined Chelsea, claiming many people had not supported him or the team. He did not explain who he meant, later saying he was speaking “in general” and stressing that he had no issue with the fans.

The comments came after a much-needed win following three games without victory. Chelsea had suffered defeats to Leeds and Atalanta and were held to a draw by Bournemouth, raising concerns about consistency.

On the pitch, Chelsea were largely in control. Cole Palmer opened the scoring in the 21st minute, finishing calmly after a through-ball from Malo Gusto. It was Palmer’s first goal in nearly three months. Gusto then doubled the lead just before half-time, turning in a low cross from Pedro Neto.

cole palmer scored at home after being sidelined for months due to an injury he sustained earlier in season.

Despite the comfortable scoreline, Chelsea still showed signs of weakness. Everton created chances and hit the post late on through Iliman Ndiaye, but never truly looked like getting back into the game.

Chelsea’s season has been marked by sharp contrasts. They have a young squad full of talent and can play attractive football, but they often struggle to maintain control. Injuries in defence and the suspension of Moisés Caicedo have added to the problem, while the absence of an experienced leader at the back has been felt.

The return of Wesley Fofana has helped stabilise the defence. Chelsea have conceded fewer goals when he starts, highlighting his importance.

Everton manager David Moyes said his side played well but lacked quality in key moments, adding that injuries during the game were also a concern.

The win leaves Chelsea still chasing consistency. While the result eased short-term pressure, Maresca’s comments have raised fresh questions at a time when the club needs calm and clarity.
