“He Sings Well, and I’m Proud”: Bien-Aimé Baraza Earns Heartfelt Praise from His Mother

Former Deputy Chief Justice Dr Nancy Barasa has publicly expressed deep pride in her son, Bien-Aimé Baraza, one of Kenya’s most admired musicians and a founding member of Sauti Sol.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Dr Barasa described her son as a gifted and passionate artist whose music continues to inspire audiences across Africa.

“I listen to Bien very much. He sings well, and I’m very proud of his music. He’s a wonderful musician, and I love his dancing,” she said warmly.

Her words struck a chord online, revealing a rarely seen side of the chart-topping singer — that of a son deeply supported by his family.

From Band to Solo Success

Award-winning Kenyan pop group Sauti Sol

Bien first rose to prominence with Sauti Sol, the Afro-pop group he co-founded in 2005 alongside Savara Mudigi, Polycarp Otieno, and Willis Chimano.

The band became a powerhouse in African music, known for blending soulful harmonies and Kenyan rhythms in hits such as Sura Yako, Kuliko Jana, and Live and Die in Africa.

Their artistry helped redefine modern Kenyan sound, bringing East African music to global stages from Lagos to London, and earning them numerous international awards.

After Sauti Sol announced an indefinite hiatus in 2023, Bien embarked on a solo journey — a decision that drew scepticism from some quarters. Yet, he quickly proved himself with a string of successful singles, including Too Easy, My Baby, True Love, and Ma Cherie.

His solo sound — a mix of Afrobeat, soul, and pop — has kept him at the top of charts and firmly in the hearts of his fans.

A Voice Beyond Music

Bien Aime Baraza

Beyond performance, Bien has become known for his honesty and vulnerability. He speaks openly about creativity, mental health, and the struggles behind artistic success — topics that resonate strongly with Kenya’s younger generation.

In previous interviews, he credited his parents for giving him a grounded upbringing. “Discipline and self-awareness were everything at home,” he once said.

Dr Barasa’s recent remarks seem to affirm that foundation — a mother’s faith that continues to shape the man behind the music.

Dr Barasa’s comments quickly went viral, drawing admiration from fans and fellow artists alike. Many praised her openness and encouragement, noting that such public displays of pride from African parents are rare.

Comedian DJ Shiti commented, “Bien is a wonderful musician for real,” while another fan wrote, “Thanks to the parents who support their children’s talent.”

A Mother’s Pride, A Nation’s Star

For Bien, whose work often weaves together humour, heart, and honesty, the praise from his mother carries more than sentiment — it’s a reminder of where it all began.

Behind the global acclaim and sold-out shows stands a mother proud of her son — and a son who continues to make his family, and his country, proud.
