Four Killed, Dozens Injured in Violent June 25 Protest in Nyeri

NYERI — Four people died and at least 27 others were injured during a violent protest in Nyeri County on Tuesday, as Kenyans marked the first anniversary of the 2024 anti-finance bill demonstrations.

The protest, largely driven by Gen Z activists through social media, was intended as a memorial for victims killed in last year’s police crackdown. But the demonstrations spiraled into chaos in multiple towns, leading to deadly clashes with law enforcement and widespread damage to property.

Authorities confirmed two people were shot dead in Karatina, one in Nyeri town, and another in Othaya. Local officials reported that twelve individuals remain hospitalized with bullet wounds. Fifteen others received treatment for minor injuries and were discharged.

Edward Mureu, Nyeri County Director of Medical Services, confirmed the figures. “We have stabilized most of the wounded. Twelve patients sustained gunshot injuries and are under close monitoring,” he stated.

A violent confrontation between police and protesters broke out near the Naivas Supermarket branch in Nyeri town late in the afternoon. Witnesses said the crowd forced its way inside the building after breaking down a door. Police responded with tear gas and live ammunition, according to multiple accounts from the scene.

Rumors that bodies might be inside the supermarket triggered panic. Residents demanded access to the premises, but police blocked entry. “Some people saw officers beating looters inside the supermarket. We fear some may have died in there,” a witness said outside the building.

Police have not released an official statement addressing the deaths or the claims related to the supermarket. However, local authorities indicated that investigations into the looting and shootings are underway.

In Karatina, one of the victims was reportedly shot in the head while working out at a nearby gym. Another, identified as a student, was gunned down near the cemetery. The victims in Othaya and Nyeri town were also shot during confrontations between police and protesters.

By dusk, multiple businesses had closed, and security patrols were intensified across Nyeri County. Tensions remained high overnight.

Tuesday’s protest was part of a nationwide movement commemorating those killed during the 2024 demonstrations against the finance bill. What began as peaceful gatherings turned into running battles with police in various towns, with Nyeri registering the highest casualties.

The anniversary was meant to honor those who died demanding economic justice. Instead, it has added to a growing list of casualties linked to police response to public protests.

As of Wednesday morning, no government official had issued a public apology or taken responsibility for the deaths. Community leaders and rights groups have demanded transparency and accountability from security agencies.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority has yet to confirm whether it will launch a formal inquiry into the events in Nyeri.
