Newton Karish to Run on DP Ticket in Mbeere North By-Election

EMBU — The Democratic Party (DP) has nominated Newton Kariuki, widely known as Newton Karish, to contest the Mbeere North parliamentary by-election. Karish currently represents Muminji Ward as a Member of the County Assembly.

DP leaders Lenny Kivuti and Justin Muturi jointly unveiled Karish’s candidacy during a public address held in Embu County. Muturi described the party’s choice as deliberate and grounded in service.

“Karish is no stranger to service. His leadership in Muminji speaks for itself,” Muturi said. “He listens to the people and stands firm on values that matter.”

Karish’s entry into the race follows the resignation of Godfrey Ruku, who vacated the seat after President William Ruto appointed him Cabinet Secretary for Public Service and Human Resource Development.

The by-election comes at a time of heightened political tension within the ruling coalition. On March 26, President Ruto dismissed Muturi from his role in the Cabinet. The removal followed months of friction over the alleged abduction of Muturi’s son, a case that implicated the National Intelligence Service (NIS).

According to public statements by Muturi, the fallout began in June 2023 after his son’s disappearance, which he claims was linked to state agents. The matter strained his ties with Ruto, leading to his eventual ouster from government.

Despite the political split, Muturi remains active and has now thrown his weight behind Karish.

Karish’s campaign is expected to focus on constituency development, youth programs, and public accountability issues he previously championed as an MCA. Speaking at the event, Karish thanked party leaders for their trust and vowed to bring “grassroots leadership” to the national stage.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has yet to confirm the official by-election date. However, preparations are underway, with political parties mobilizing supporters in the region.

The Mbeere North race is set to test party influence outside Nairobi and offer a glimpse into shifting alliances ahead of the 2027 general election
