WASHINGTON D.C. — Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has formally announced his bid for Kenya’s presidency in the 2027 election. Speaking directly to Kenyans in the United States, Matiang’i declared his readiness to lead the country without excuses or blame, promising full accountability and a focus on reform.

“I will not make excuses or blame anyone I will take responsibility,” Matiang’i said on Monday, addressing a packed hall of diaspora citizens in Washington, D.C. “Running a country is not child’s play. It is serious business.”

Matiang’i used the platform to deliver sharp criticism of the current administration, citing what he called its failure to prioritize key national issues. He pointed to economic uncertainty, political frustration, and growing instability in the education sector as warning signs of weak leadership.

“We are facing momentary challenges not permanent ones,” he said. “We have enough resources to lift this country. We only need honest leadership and clear direction.”

He described the role of leadership as weighty and deeply consequential. “No one tells you what it means until you sit in that office and realize millions are listening to your decisions.”

Matiang’i emphasized education reform as a cornerstone of his agenda. He accused the current government of slashing school funding and warned that policy inconsistency was causing distress in classrooms.

“We used to send KES 1,400 per primary school pupil and KES 22,000 for each secondary school student,” he said. “Now that’s been reduced, and in some cases, schools are not receiving funds at all.”

He recounted speaking directly with school heads who shared their concerns. “They are stressed. The education sector needs stability and long-term planning.”

Matiang’i also appealed to Kenyans abroad to play a more active role in shaping the country’s future. He called for inclusion of the diaspora in national dialogue and policymaking, saying their contributions are vital to building a stronger nation.

“We cannot build a future for Kenya without the diaspora,” he said. “Your voice matters. Your presence counts.”

During his remarks, he paused to honor youth protesters who lost their lives in the 2024 Gen Z demonstrations against the Finance Bill. “Let us observe two minutes of silence for the young people we lost last year,” he told the audience.

The speech marked Matiang’i’s most direct statement yet about his presidential intentions. Though long speculated as a contender, he had previously remained cautious in confirming his plans.

This announcement sets the stage for what is expected to be a highly contested race, as Kenya prepares for the 2027 general elections amid rising public demand for accountability, transparency, and reform in government.

Matiang’i’s promise was simple and clear: “No excuses. I’m ready to lead.”
