Kenya Red Cross Rescues Protesters as Chaos Erupts in Nairobi CBD

Amid clouds of tear gas and the sound of sirens, the Kenya Red Cross rushed into action on Wednesday as parts of Nairobi’s city centre turned into scenes of turmoil.

Protests against the government’s economic policies-driven largely by young Kenyans-took over the streets. What began as peaceful gatherings quickly escalated into confrontations with police. As tensions rose, the Kenya Red Cross became a critical presence on the ground.

“Our job is to help, no matter the circumstances,” said a Red Cross first responder at the scene. “We were treating people with injuries and helping those overcome by tear gas.”

The humanitarian organization deployed teams throughout the Central Business District, offering first aid and evacuating the wounded to local hospitals. Their volunteers worked under pressure, weaving through crowds to reach those in distress.

In a statement shared on their official Instagram page, the Red Cross said: “Our teams are currently on the ground in Nairobi CBD responding to injuries sustained during ongoing demonstrations. We remain committed to supporting Kenyans in times of need.”

Protesters interviewed by local media described a confusing and often frightening scene. One young woman said she had been separated from her friends during the chaos. “I couldn’t breathe. There was so much smoke. But a Red Cross person gave me water and stayed with me until I felt okay,” she said.

The protests, which have spread to multiple counties, are part of a broader movement calling for accountability, better governance, and economic relief. While the demonstrations are largely peaceful, clashes between demonstrators and security forces have become increasingly common.

Exact numbers of those injured remain unclear. However, hospitals in the capital confirmed receiving people needing urgent care following the unrest.

The Kenya Red Cross reminded the public to use their toll-free line-1199-for emergency assistance. Their visible and swift response has drawn widespread praise from many Kenyans on social media, who described the organization as a “beacon of hope” in a tense and unpredictable situation.

As the protest movement shows no signs of slowing down, the Red Cross is likely to remain at the heart of the humanitarian response, offering help where it’s needed most-without fear or favor.
