Gyökeres Eyes Premier League Move as Arsenal, Man United Battle for His Signature

Viktor Gyökeres, one of Europe’s most in-demand strikers, is pushing for a move away from Sporting CP this summer – with both Arsenal and Manchester United vying for his signature.

The 26-year-old Swedish forward has reportedly informed the Portuguese club that he does not wish to remain in Lisbon, making it clear he is ready for the next chapter in his career.

According to people close to the negotiations, Gyökeres is currently not training with Sporting and has no intention of returning to the pitch until his future is resolved.

Though several top clubs are watching closely, the Premier League appears to be his likely destination. Arsenal have made the first formal approach, submitting an initial offer of €55 million plus €10 million in add-ons. Sporting rejected the bid but talks are ongoing.

Manchester United, despite not yet tabling a formal bid, remain the player’s preferred choice. Sources familiar with the situation say Gyökeres has “told United he wants to join,” despite the club missing out on Champions League football next season.

The two Premier League giants now find themselves locked in a quiet tug-of-war.

Arsenal Lead the Race-For Now

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is understood to be keen on the striker, who scored 29 goals in the Primeira Liga last season. The Gunners want to strengthen their attack ahead of a demanding Champions League campaign.

Reports suggest Sporting would be willing to let Gyökeres go for around €80 million (£68 million), slightly below his €100 million release clause. Arsenal are believed to be preparing an improved offer.

Sporting, for their part, are holding firm. Club officials maintain they will not sell unless the price is right.

United’s Challenge: Money Before Movement

Manchester United face a more complex path. Financial rules under the Premier League’s profit and sustainability framework may limit their ability to spend until players are sold.

Still, the club’s appeal remains strong. “Gyökeres sees United as a dream move,” said a source close to the striker. “But he’s waiting to see if they can match Sporting’s price.”

New sporting director Dan Ashworth, appointed earlier this month, is expected to play a key role in any potential deal. But as of now, United’s interest remains informal.

Others Watching, Few Moving

Chelsea, Juventus and even Saudi Arabian clubs have shown interest in the Swedish striker. But none appear close to a concrete offer.

Liverpool, too, have been linked in recent days. However, sources at Anfield have played down reports of a move, suggesting the club is exploring other forward options instead.

What’s Next?

Gyökeres’ next move is still undecided. But all signs suggest that he is unlikely to play for Sporting again. The only question is where he will land -and which club will blink first in a transfer market already spinning with speculation.

Sporting’s patience, Arsenal’s ambition, and United’s financial flexibility will all shape the outcome in the weeks ahead.

As the striker waits, so do the fans.
