Government Unveils 220 New Homes Under Machakos Affordable Housing Project

The Kenyan government has completed the construction of 220 affordable housing units under the Boma Yangu program in Machakos County, marking a key milestone in its nationwide housing initiative.

The newly built homes, located in the Machakos Affordable Housing Project, include studio apartments, one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom units. The units are now available for purchase, with an official launch scheduled in the coming weeks.

Housing and Urban Development Principal Secretary Charles Hinga confirmed the completion and emphasized the project’s goal of expanding access to homeownership for ordinary Kenyans.

“These projects are for Kenyans. We have made deliberate efforts to ensure every citizen can save, purchase, and own a housing unit as they pursue their aspirations,” Hinga said during a briefing.

The Machakos project forms part of the national Affordable Housing Programme, which aims to deliver accessible and decent homes in all 47 counties. The program focuses on reducing the housing deficit and providing options for low and middle-income earners.

The government has prioritized affordable housing as one of its core development pillars, targeting thousands of units annually. The completed Machakos homes are expected to ease pressure on urban housing demand and offer residents a chance at secure property ownership.

Hinga reaffirmed that the Affordable Housing Programme is built on inclusivity and public access. He noted that the Boma Yangu platform remains open for registration, allowing Kenyans to apply, save, and track progress in securing homes.

The completion of the 220 units adds to the growing number of homes delivered under the initiative, with similar developments underway in Nairobi, Nakuru, Kisumu, and other urban centers.

The Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing, and Urban Development has projected a steady increase in completed units over the next fiscal year, as construction accelerates in priority sites.

No additional costs or delays were reported at the Machakos site as of June 20. The government has not yet disclosed pricing for the units, but officials say affordability remains the guiding principle.

Interested buyers can register through the Boma Yangu portal, where allocations will be handled transparently based on availability and application criteria.
