AK-47 stolen in Dagoretti recovered in Kabete after tip-off

AK-47 Recovered in Kabete After June 25 Police Post Raid

Kenyan police recovered an AK-47 rifle in Kabete that was stolen from Dagoretti Police station during violent anti-government protests on June 25. Authorities linked the weapon to the night attack that left the post vandalized and partially burned.

According to a statement from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the recovery followed a tip-off about a man seen carrying a bulging bag at Gravity Bar in the Gahui area. Officers from Kabete Police Station responded quickly, tracing the suspect to his home in the Njuki-Kirigu neighborhood.

Police said the man escaped before they arrived.

A search of his residence, witnessed by his mother, led to the discovery of an AK-47 rifle, an empty magazine, and a single 7.62mm round. The DCI confirmed the items matched those looted during the attack on the Dagoretti Police Post.

“The rifle was part of the cache stolen when the station was torched,” DCI investigators confirmed in their report. Forensic analysis is underway to verify any other links to the stolen arsenal.

The recovery is part of a national security operation launched after the June 25 protests, which saw targeted attacks on police stations and the theft of weapons. Investigations point to a coordinated effort to overwhelm law enforcement during the demonstrations.

President William Ruto has directed the National Police Service to arrest all suspects linked to the unrest. The DCI has since expanded its search efforts, following multiple leads across Nairobi and its outskirts.

Director of Criminal Investigations Mohamed Amin held a security review with top officers to assess the impact of the protests. The June 25 demonstrations, sparked by opposition to new tax laws, left public infrastructure damaged and police officers injured.

Officials have confirmed the manhunt for the suspect seen in Kabete remains active. Police are urging the public to report any sightings or information that may aid in his arrest.

“We are committed to recovering all stolen weapons and bringing the culprits to justice,” a senior investigator said.

The operation remains ongoing as security forces aim to restore public confidence and prevent further threats to law enforcement.
