Huawei DigiTruck graduates 180 youths with digital skills in Kenya

NAKURU, Kenya — In a significant stride towards digital inclusion, over 180 young individuals from Baringo County have completed a four-week digital skills training programme. The initiative, part of Huawei’s DigiTruck project, aims to bridge the digital divide in underserved regions of Kenya.

The graduation ceremony, held at the Kabimoi Vocational Training Centre in Eldama Ravine, was attended by Information, Communication and Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo, who commended the graduates for their commitment. He emphasized the importance of digital literacy in unlocking economic opportunities and fostering innovation.

The Huawei DigiTruck is a mobile, solar-powered classroom designed to deliver free digital skills training to remote communities. Equipped with laptops, internet access, and virtual reality tools, the DigiTruck provides hands-on education in areas such as computer literacy, online marketing, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy.

Since its inception in 2019, the DigiTruck program has trained over 6,000 youth across 36 counties in Kenya. This year alone, more than 680 young people have benefited from the initiative, with recent programmes in Migori and Homa Bay counties.

Huawei Kenya Deputy CEO Stephen Zhang highlighted the programme’s impact, stating that it empowers communities by providing the digital tools and knowledge necessary to participate in the modern economy. He also noted that the initiative fosters a culture of innovation, with graduates encouraged to develop projects that address local challenges.

The Baringo graduates have already begun applying their new skills. Brian Kipchumba plans to collaborate with local veterinarians to share timely advice with farmers via social media, aiming to improve animal health and reduce livestock losses. Kirui Jerono intends to promote online job platforms and teach digital skills to peers, particularly in light of a new digital hub under construction nearby.

The DigiTruck programme aligns with Kenya’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, focusing on enhancing digital literacy and fostering economic growth in rural areas. As the initiative continues to expand, it holds the promise of equipping more young Kenyans with the skills needed to thrive in an increasingly digital world
