AG clarifies custody of public seal under my control amid confusion

NAIROBI — Attorney General Dorcas Oduor has moved swiftly to clear up confusion over who holds custody of Kenya’s public seal, a key symbol of government authority.

Addressing the media after unveiling a new committee designed to speed up the resolution of land and environmental disputes, Oduor firmly rejected reports that the public seal had been transferred to the office of the head of public service.

“The public seal remains under the custody of my office,” Oduor said. “This is a vital government emblem used to authenticate official documents and give formal approval to governance, financial transactions, diplomatic agreements, and other critical national matters.”

The seal’s role is significant. It certifies documents as genuine and serves as a formal endorsement from the government, underscoring the legal weight behind decisions and agreements.

Earlier media coverage had suggested that the seal’s custody had shifted away from the Attorney General’s office, sparking debate and uncertainty among government officials and the public alike.

While addressing a rising backlog of land and environment cases in Kenya’s courts, Oduor introduced the Committee for Rapid Results Initiative. The committee aims to accelerate the settlement of over 10,500 pending disputes that have accumulated in the legal system.

“The establishment of this committee marks an important step,” she said. “Timely and effective implementation of its recommendations will benefit stakeholders and policy makers at both county and national levels.”

The land and environment sector continues to face challenges amid increasing claims and legal wrangles. Officials hope the new committee will bring much-needed relief to a congested judicial process.

As for the public seal, the Attorney General’s statement closes a chapter of speculation, reaffirming her office’s role as the guardian of this essential government instrument.
