The suspects include Corporal Ronald Babo, Police Constable Evans Kipkirui, Police Constable Mollent Achieng, Police Constable Zachary Nyabuto, and Police Constable Gerald Mutuku.

The five officers were arrested on Tuesday, following the dramatic escape of 13 prisoners who had been held at the station on various charges.

Among the escapees was Collins Jumaisi, a prime suspect in the notorious Kware murders, whose arrest in late June 2024 had been a significant breakthrough for law enforcement.

According to the prosecution’s application presented in court, the officers were on duty on the day the prisoners made their escape. The detainees allegedly managed to cut through a wire mesh at the station’s basking bay, enabling their daring breakout.

In light of this, Acting Inspector General Gilbert Masengeli ordered the arrest of the officers, describing the escape as an “inside job.”

The court was informed that the investigation is ongoing, with the officers’ mobile phones currently being analyzed by the cybercrime unit based at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters.

Additionally, the prosecution highlighted that there are other accomplices still at large and that the detained officers have expressed willingness to assist in apprehending them.

“The investigations in the matter are not yet complete,” the application reads, underscoring the need for additional time to conclude the probe. The prosecution also mentioned that CCTV footage from the station is being reviewed to provide further clarity on the events leading to the escape.

The high-profile case has drawn significant public interest, particularly due to the involvement of Collins Jumaisi. The case is now clouded with concerns over possible collusion within the police force, as authorities work to bring both the escapees and any aiding parties to justice.

The five officers remain in custody as the court considers the prosecution’s request for an extended detention period to finalize the investigations.
