Ian Njoroge and Police Brutality in Kenya

The Kenyan police force has been on the front line of news headlines this week. The stories have implicated the Kenyan police force while also showing the dangers they go through in their line of duty.

The case of the 19-year-old who attacked a traffic officer at Mirema was one to gage with netizens online. Ian Njoroge was arrested at his home in Jacaranda in Kayole. He was arraigned in Milimani court and was charged with the account robbery with violence, assault that led to bodily harm, and resisting arrest.

During his court hearing, Ian’s lawyer was quick to state the harm he had gone through at the hands of the police during his arrest. It was also stated Ian was molested this was a statement from his lawyer that prompted an investigation into the matter.

In a similar account case that took place in Kakamega, a 24-year-old man was arrested for assaulting a police officer. Tyson Kayesi the accused person was arraigned in court on 6 June 2024, before Kakamega Principal Magistrate J.J. Masinga where he was charged with assault, which he denied on two accounts before finally pleading guilty.

He was sentenced to 7 years in prison which is the minimum sentence for such a case per the Constitution. The assault took place in May of this year.

Another police-related story that has made headlines this week is the arrest of a Nairobi parliamentary officer Corporal John Mwai. Arrested on an account of corruption by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

The arrest occurred after Corporal John asked for a Ksh40,000 bribe from a complainant who had a pending case at the station. The money was for the case to go in the complainant’s favor. After the arrest, his file was forwarded to the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP).

Corporal John has since been released on bail while further investigations are conducted.
