Understanding Disorders that Affect Reading

According to National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, reading disorders occur when a person has trouble reading words or understanding what they read.

Additionally, reading disorders are also not a type of intellectual or developmental disorder, thus are not a sign of lower intelligence or unwillingness to learn.

Some of these reading disorders include:

Dyslexia

This disorder specifically impairs a person’s ability to read. Individuals with dyslexia have normal intelligence, but they read at levels significantly lower than expected.

In addition, people with dyslexia mostly have a hard time identifying speech sounds, understanding written words, and naming objects quickly.

However, despite of its challenges, most children with dyslexia can succeed in school with tutoring or a specialized education program.

Hyperlexia

This is a disorder where people have advanced reading skills, but may have problems understanding what is read or spoken aloud.

In addition, victims may also have cognitive or social problems.

According to an article written by SSM Health, Speech and language therapy, Occupational therapy, Play based ABA (applied behavioral analysis) and sound treatment program, are some of the interventions that can help a child with this disorder to improve.
