Netflix is set to cancel the free plan for its subscribers who have been using the platform to stream specific shows without paying.

The free plan will be discontinued on November 1, according to Netflix, in line with what the company terms as their change in membership. Users of the Free plan will have their membership canceled and will be required to pay at least Ksh. 200 to access shows on the streaming platform.

In a ground-breaking move, the streaming platform first introduced the Free Plan in Kenya in September 2021, making that nation the first in the world to do so. This project, which largely targeted Android users, was perceived as an effort to enter the region’s expanding streaming market.

Users of the Netflix Free plan may access a small number of titles without having to pay a monthly fee. The streaming platform made a risky move to enter the Kenyan market and present potential clients with its enormous collection of films and TV episodes.

Along with ending the Free plan, Netflix made news earlier this year by lowering the cost of its subscriptions in Kenya. The business reduced the price of several subscription packages in February 2023 to make its service more accessible to Kenyan viewers. The Mobile-Only plan, for instance, was reduced from Ksh. 300 to Ksh. 200, while the Basic plan was reduced from Ksh. 700 to Ksh. 300. The Premium plan was dropped from Ksh. 1450 to Ksh. 1100, and the Standard plan was decreased from Ksh. 1100 to Ksh. 700.

Many customers applauded these price reductions, especially following a price increase in May 2021.
