Meru County Women Leaders Defend Impeachment, Cite Leadership Concerns

Meru governor impeached

A group of women leaders from Meru County have issued a statement regarding the impeachment of Governor Kawira Mwangaza. In their declaration, the women emphasized that Mwangaza’s removal from office should not be construed as a gender-based issue, but rather as a consequence of her perceived leadership inadequacies.

The women’s union asserted that the governor’s impeachment was justified due to her alleged role in fostering division and disruption within the community. According to one of the women leaders, Karimi Njeru, Governor Mwangaza’s one-year tenure in office was characterized by what they described as a pattern of impunity, destructive actions, discrimination, and the promotion of disunity. Consequently, the women of Meru voiced their collective support for Governor Mwangaza’s impeachment.

“The one year in office Kawira Mwangaza has proven to be the face of impunity, the face of destruction, the face of discrimination and she has also proven to be the face of disunity and that is why we, the women of Meru as a whole, support the impeachment of Kawira Mwangaza,” said Karimi Njeru.

Additionally, the women leaders called upon the Council of Governors (CoG) and national leaders to refrain from interfering in the County Assembly’s decision-making process. They further urged the Senate not to overturn Mwangaza’s impeachment, citing her perceived obstruction of regional development.

The women leaders also encouraged national leaders to align with the decision made by President William Ruto and his deputy, which allows county residents to address their own issues independently as reported by People Daily.

Governor Mwangaza’s impeachment took place on a recent Wednesday, with all 59 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) present in the House voting in favor of her removal from office. Notably, the remaining 10 MCAs were absent during the voting process. The grounds for her impeachment included allegations of gross misconduct, misappropriation of public funds, and contempt of the county assembly, among other charges.

In December 2022,  the county assembly had impeached Governor Mwangaza on various counts, including the misuse of county resources, nepotism, unethical behavior, and unauthorized appointments. However, the Senate overturned this resolution on December 30, 2022, leading to a situation where four county executives were placed on a year-long leave with full pay.
