The Chinese Embassy’s advisory, issued recently, urges Chinese citizens in Kenya to exercise additional caution due to a perceived increase in the country’s security uncertainties. The advisory advises vigilance, monitoring of local security conditions, and avoidance of crowded or tourist-heavy areas. Specific regions, including Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Lamu counties, and border areas, have been singled out as places requiring added caution.

“The Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Chinese Embassy in Kenya remind Chinese citizens in Kenya to pay close attention to the local social security situation, strengthen their own safety precautions, try to avoid going to areas where foreign tourists gather and crowded places,’’ read the advisory.

Less than two weeks ago, the United States Embassy in Nairobi issued a security alert, warning its citizens about potential terrorist threats. The alert indicates that locations frequently visited by foreigners and tourists in Nairobi and other parts of Kenya may be at risk. These locations include hotels, restaurants, embassies, shopping centers, markets, as well as schools, police stations, places of worship, and other areas frequented by foreigners and tourists.

“Locations frequented by US citizens and other foreigners and tourists in Nairobi and elsewhere in Kenya continue to be attractive targets to terrorists planning to conduct potentially imminent attacks,” read part of the statement issued on October 13th.

In response to these concerns, both embassies have advised their citizens to remain vigilant in tourist-heavy areas, review personal security plans, and stay aware of their surroundings. They also recommend monitoring local media for updates, avoiding protest areas and demonstrations, refraining from large crowds, and maintaining a low profile to reduce potential risk.
