Bobi Wine, the leader of the opposition in Uganda, revealed on Thursday that he was detained by security personnel upon his return from a vacation overseas and that he is now under house arrest.
Speaking to media professionals from his home, the popstar turned politician said that he was picked up illegally by police. He lamented that as soon as he touched down, thugs seized him, dragged him, pulled his hands, and shoved him into a waiting private car. He further claims that they took him to the old airport, where they stopped the car, took him out, and put him inside a military vehicle with numerous soldiers and policemen.

Wine was not detained, according to a statement from the Ugandan police, who said they were merely there to accompany him to his home outside of Kampala.
We wish to inform the public that the NUP President, Hon. Kyagulanyi Robert was successfully escorted by our security team from Entebbe to his home in Magere. He reached his home around 11.20am, and is with his family and friends. Disregard rumors of his arrest by propagandists.… pic.twitter.com/o0rFo6yQ31

Wine’s National Unity Platform (NUP) tweeted a video of him being detained by security guards as soon as he got off the plane, with a man constantly yelling, “Where are you taking him, where are you taking him.”
Due to concerns over public order, authorities declared last month that Wine’s National Unity Platform demonstrations would be prohibited nationwide. Since early Thursday morning, it has been reported that Ugandan soldiers and other security personnel have been stationed outside the NUP headquarters and in the central business district of Kampala, as well as on the highways leading to Entebbe Airport.
